Lola in Love

Love Bugs, that is...

If you are not from the Southeast, you may not be familiar with love bugs. Miraculously twice a year, these insects come out of nowhere and end up plastered to windshields, and bumpers.

Due to Lola's aerodynamics, or lack thereof, she is especially susceptible to love bugs. Coupled with the fact that Lola lives on the outskirts of town, her treks out and about means she is usually bombarded by the pesky little honeymoon flies.

According to Wikipedia, there is a theory that love bugs give a clue as to whether there is going to be an active hurricane season. Florida, in 2004 saw a lot of love bugs prior to an active hurricane season. In 2005 and 2006, there were fewer love bugs and the state had relatively quiet hurricane years. This year there are love bugs EVERYWHERE and it is predicted that the Atlantic is to have a very active storm season from June to November.

Lola is in desperate need of a bath. The love bugs carcasses are high in acidity and can eat away at paint, and pit chrome. Some have said that wiping the areas affected by love bugs with a dryer sheet aid in their removal. Other theories include spraying the areas with a cooking spray such as Pam. And a new one added to the mix, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: apparently it will take crayon marks off the walls and love bugs off the car.

With June right around the corner, the love bugs will become a distant memory. Until they come back in September...

The Best of Cakeplow, Part 1

OK, if radio talk show hosts can do "best of" shows, why can't Cakeplow? So here's part one in an occasional series reviewing some of the greatest posts in Cakeplow's two-year history. For the first installment of what will be a recurring feature, I would like to highlight one MindCometeer's trip to the West Wing of the White House in October of 2005.

Look for more "Best of Cakeplow" soon.

TGIF

Last Friday, MindCometeers were let off work a few hours early to celebrate the release of Spiderman 3 - which conveniently coinsided with the under-appreciated celebration of Quatro de Mayo. A company survey this week confirmed that three MindComet employees actually took this opportunity to see the movie (contributing about $24 to the $148 million that the webcrawler brought in over the weekend).

Company turnout at the movie would have been greater, but the persuasive nature of softball enthusiast/connoisseur Matt Thompson and promises of celebratory Tequila shots led many to partake in softball practice and happy hour instead of spending their afternoon with Spidey.

Upcoming movie releases - Friday hours to be determined.

Shrek the Third - May 18th
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - May 25th
Transformers - July 4th
The Simpsons Movie - July 27th

Food in the Kitchen, First Come First Serve

It's the universally adored page: 'ExtraFoodInTheKitchen'. And it does have to be presented just like that. No details whether its leftover bagels, doughnuts or the extra birthday cake that someone just didn't want around their own house, the pager has to get the message out there as fast as possible. Otherwise all the pagees will beat them to the goodies that are waiting to be consumed.

Not so sure how it works in most other offices but within MindComet, that announcement alone is the feeding frenzy trigger. Extra food in the kitchen is the green light for common decency to fly out the window. Women and children can be mauled over with no questions asked; acts of arson, asssult and/or battery can be overlooked in the name of free food. The only rule: you must announce the good news before helping yourself- otherwise its like insider trading. And that's just unethical.

And They’re Off…

In honor of this Saturday's Kentucky Derby, this very well could be the best tongue-twister in the world.

See if you can say it three times fast.

One One was a Racehorse.
One Two was one too.
One One won one race
One Two won one too.

CSI Target?!?

OK, so I found out recently from someone who works for Target (sorry, Tar-zhay) that Target has a forensics lab. Huh?!? A forensics lab?!? Not only that, but as a community service, 40% of the lab's time is donated to government agencies to help solve crimes. What?!?

Intrigued, I did a bit of research and found this article on the subject.

Weird, dude. Just weird.
