Freezing Oranges, Batman!

So, it's pretty funny to me what makes the headlines in Central Florida. Each state has their catastrophic weather event - floods, mudslides, earthquakes, tornados, blizzards, etc.

Last night I turned on the late night local news (a rare event in my household) and was amazed at what first appeared to be a hurricane report. It was actually coverage of the overnight FREEZE alerts for our usually warm & sunny state. I actually heard a newscaster say something to the effect of ,'it's time to hunker down central florida - we could hit record lows tonight - stay inside if you can, the following shelters are also open...' (b-roll playing in the background with empty streets - Floridians are afraid to go out in the cold!)

I thought it was nuts being that I grew up in the NorthEast, where we hit temperatues below 32 degrees daily for at least 3 months out of the year.

We were also nervous about potentially freezing some of our lucrative crops because a number of them are already producing fruit - primarily oranges.

That made me think of a childhood favorite - ORANGE JULIUS. Are those still around?

Strappy Shoe Money

A few of us were out in Phoenix/Scottsdale last week and we ended up hanging out with some awesome prospective clients at the Casino Arizona. Needless to say I've never been much of a gambler... After patiently observing for about 30 minutes I ponied up to the $5 tables and ended up walking out with $85 more in my pocket than when I started. This place was enormous and the lounge act was off the chain - jk!

Check out the casino: www.casinoaz.com

I'm off to spend my winnings on a new pair of shoes!

Here's a pair I've been eyeing:

Running for Lives

Sunday morning, just as the sun was rising, some of the ladies of MindComet met at the entrance of Mead Gardens in Winter Park to participate in the 30th Annual Lady Track Shack 5k (3.1 miles).

The proceeds from this race allow under-privileged women in our community to get mammograms for free.

The forecast called for rain, but we weren't going to let a few raindrops hold us back! We're tougher than that and decked out in matching pink camouflage bandanas, we could prove it! We made our way to the starting line and joined the other 1,376 ladies who were up to the challenge. The gun sounded at 7:30 AM and the race was underway!

Even though it was just a little chilly, it was a beautiful morning for a run. Right around 7:50 AM the rain started to fall. And while it might appear that running in the rain is unpleasant, this light misting lasted just a few minutes and was actually quite refreshing!

The misting made the brick streets a little slick. We maintained our footing and not one of us took a "digger" and we all finished without incident.

So, how'd we do?

Pretty darn good!

    PPP Puzzizzle…

so... rumor has it that Michelle, a postie with our sister company PayPerPost.com, recently got hooked up with an HP camera through a PPP contest.

well, ppp wants to give away another camera. unfortunately, since i work for a sister company, i get no love. it has something to do with legal things and small woodland creatures. anyhow... PPP has made a collage (or "college" for those of you that are used to ted murphy's typing skills) of Michelle's pics, taken with the fancy new hp camera, and chopped it into 48 puzzle pieces. now, PPP posties are on the hunt for each of those 48 pieces. as much fun as it may seem to print them out and eat them, we'd suggest you overcome your urges and instead put them together for the chance at being the first to submit the entire completed puzzle along with the Puzzle Key. That person will win $1000. that's 1000(ish) frosties for those of you that need to convert monetary sums to fast food in order to understand the magnitude.

so, without further adieu... here is puzzle piece 32:

    Google Images Loves Cakeplow

So some of you may remember the Cakeplow post I did last year regarding me & Ricardo Montalban. Well, I was informed that if you do a search for Ricardo Montalban on Google Images, the picture I used for that post comes up on the second results page. Try it for yourself!

First, go to images.google.com and type in "Ricardo Montalban":

Submit the search, go to the second page, and see what shows up:

Even cooler is the fact that if you Google Image search my name, the second picture that shows up is a picture from me at the White House that I used in a Cakeplow post back in late 2005.

    Google Images loves Cakeplow!

Lola and the Law: The Sequel

Seems that Lola is back to her devilish ways. If you haven't been keeping score, just two short months ago Lola was scolded by Orange County's finest for not being able to prove she was insured. The fine: $71.50

Over the weekend, the little lady was out for a leisurely drive, not breaking any rules, and keeping her speed in check. As Lola approached Main Street, no one was surprised when the Police Mustang got into the right lane directly behind the German Girl. The police station and county jail are right around the corner and the officer was surely going to take care of some official business. Much to Lola's astonishment the police officer continued behind Lola and once the intersection was cleared by both cars, the blue lights began to flash.

What in the world had Lola done this time?

The Tavares Police Department was nice enough to inform Lola that when she attempted to stop she was winking at the world. With a break light out, Lola was in trouble again.

As Lola's caretaker, I'm getting used to the protocol. I grabbed my wallet and reached for my driver's license. But it wasn't there! After a sojourn to a theme park on Saturday, I realized that I had taken my license and dropped it into my backpack. I quickly explained to the officer what I had done. She asked for my name and date of birth, and returned to her Mustang.

A few minutes later she returned with another mark against Lola – a ticket for the brake light. With it fixed in the next 30 days, Lola will have to make a trip to the Tavares Police Station to prove that she is good as new, pay $4 for the check up and then send the Lake County Clerk of Courts the signed ticket and $7.50 for consuming county resources.

    Oh Lola... What next?
