Pet Peeve of the Day

It makes me crazy when the cashier at the grocery store makes comments about my purchases.

You are the conduit for me to complete my purchase. By all means let's exchange pleasantries, but refrain from making comments or criticizing what I am purchasing to eat. Just ring it up and tell me how much I need to pay.

Don't know if your sentiments only apply when shopping at a grocery store. Having worked in retail, I would sometimes comment on something a person purchased, if I was able to reinforce a positive purchasing decision for the customer.

Something like, "Oh, I bought that same product myself, and it worked out great" seems to be appreciated by some people.

It can also convey your expertise or product knowledge. Something like, "You'll want to rinse this out in warm water before you use it because of so and so..." can provide useful information to the customer while building a strong sense of customer service.

Delivery and discretion plays a big part, because no one likes to have some creepy guy telling you, "Really? Preparation H? I find that mixing Listerine with Vaseline provides the same cooling effect."

The worst was when I bought a huge bag of Crasins (those cranberry rasin-like things) from Sam's Club. The cashier made some comment about how eating all of them would make me poop or something to that effect.

Did she really think that I was going to eat them all in one sitting?
