Beer or Cheese?

I spent the weekend in a small town in Wisconsin. Believe me when I tell you that the excitement of being dropped in the middle of America's dairyland was about as thrilling as the thought of eating a 5 pound block of salami cheese in one sitting. Little did I know that Chippewa Falls, WI is the home to the Leinenkugel's Brewery or that they gave full tours of the facility. The red light on the Leinie's Lodge was like a beacon drawing me home. Some quick facts about the brewery that amazed me:

- It would take a person 79 years at 4 bottles a day to drink one of the twenty 400 barrel containers in the brewery.
- Leinenkugel's Honey Weis, the company's most popular beer, contains 1-2 drops of honey per bottle, yet 5 gallons of honey are dropped into the 400 barrel container at once during the brewing process.
- The combination of Leinenkugel's Honey Weis and Berry Weis may be the best beer I have ever tasted.

The moral of this story: If crab cakes and football is what Maryland does, then beer and cheese are what Wisconsin does.

Sir or Madame,

When given lemons, one must make lemonade! Instead of viewing your time in Wisconsin as a curse, consider it a blessing in disguise. The state is truly "God's country" where beer is concerned. The countryside is dotted with micro breweries who deliver nothing but heady and deliscious quality in multiple flavors! While a superb beer, to most Wisconsinites, Leine's is but another Miller product.

I'm glad you somewhat enjoyed your visit to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Come back soon!

PS If your into vodka, there is also a small maker of vodka in New Richmond, Wisconsin -- 45th Parallel Vodka. Though the company is small, they're proud of their made-from-from-scratch vodka.
